Linking: Article links

Guide on how to access full-text articles from off campus with a permanent link.

What not to do...

Do you have an article or ebook URL but you cannot access it from off campus? Often the problem is with where you may have obtained the URL to the article.

When trying to provide a link to a specific article or ebook that you find in the library's resources, do not copy and paste the URL from your browser's address bar.

Linking basics

Links to most library articles and ebooks require the use of the library proxy prefix at the beginning of the link:

 https://vanguard.idm.oclc.org/login?url=

If not, you need to do the following:

  1. Make sure the URL is a permanent document link (sometimes it's called a stable URL, permalink, or persistent link). Most databases provide document persistent links back to the resource. (Click on one of the above database tabs or the links below to figure out how to get this persistent link.)

  2. In order to access the article via a document link, you need to have a URL that consists of the library proxy prefix + the document URL. The library proxy prefix provides off-campus access to electronic resources for Vanguard University faculty, staff, and students. It will prompt you for your Vanguard username and password. Once logged in to the system, you will have access to all electronic resources. The library proxy prefix is:

    https://vanguard.idm.oclc.org/login?url=

  3. You just need to add the document link to the above proxy prefix (be sure to remove any spaces between the library proxy prefix and the permanent document URL). The full URL should look like this:

    https://vanguard.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/1537286700?accountid=25359
